The most important sights in Melbourne + insider tips

Places to see in Melbourne

Melbourne Sehenswürdigkeiten 2 2 - Viel-Unterwegs.dePlanning to visit Melbourne? Then you've come to the right place. My friend Dennis has been living in the southern city by the sea for several years. He will tell you about the most beautiful sights in Melbourne.

Melbourne won't be boring, I promise you. You can easily spend a few days (or weeks) here. If you're a surfer (like me), you'll love the beaches and waves! Life in Melbourne is so relaxed that I even grab my surfboard and head to the ocean before work. Enjoy my tips for Melbourne!

Top sights in Melbourne

Skydeck at Eureka Tower

For the best view of Melbourne, head to the 88th floor skydeck of Eureka Tower. By day you can see as far as the Dandenong Mountains, by night the stunning Melbourne skyline is at your feet.

The skyscraper is 297 metres high, making it one of the tallest skyscrapers in the southern hemisphere. Yes, you read correctly, there are not as many skyscrapers in our region as in Europe.

The Euroka Tower is located on Southbank Promenade in the city centre. I find The Edge almost even cooler. Because part of the viewing platform has a glass floor. I'm always amused when I show friends around Melbourne and (especially) Asians crawl around on the glass floor.

Royal Botanical Garden

No place is more beautiful than Melbourne's botanical gardens. Did you know that Melbourne is also known as the Garden City? Therefore, the imprint "Victoria - Garden State" on Victorian car licence plates is not surprising at all. Unfortunately, it disappeared by 1994, and had to give way to a new motto (currently: Victoria - The Education State).

Tram line 35

If you don't feel like sightseeing on foot, you can hop on the free City Circle Tram . The tram takes you around the centre of Melbourne. Best of all, it doesn't cost you a cent

Queen Victoria Market

The Queen Victoria Market has something for everyone. I love markets and here you can get everything, and it's fresh. Besides food, you can also buy handmade (indigenous) souvenirs and art.

Street Art

Do you like street art? Then you should visit Fitzroy and the Central Business District. Especially in the latter, there are cool street art laneways. These are small side streets full of artwork.

My highlights IM CBD:

  1. AC/DC Lane (for the name of the iconic Australian rockers alone).

  2. Hosier Lane

  3. Meyers Land

Especially the view of the Melbourne skyline from the Shrine of Remembrance war memorial is simply magnificent.

St Kilda

The beach, the shopping and the many good bars and restaurants make St. Kilde a favourite place.

I like to visit the artist and nightlife district of Melbourne in the early evening right after work.

If you love penguins, you should come to the jetty at St. Kilda Pier, because the cute (smelly) animals waddle ashore here every evening.

Flinders Street Station

For us Europeans, Flinders Street Station may not be quite as impressive. It is, after all, the oldest railway station in Australia (1910).

Surroundings of Melbourne

Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is one of the most visited places in Australia. I have the privilege to come here whenever I want. Especially in the Australian summer, there are so many tourists here that it is no longer beautiful. But it's worth it, either for a day trip or on a multi-day road trip.

Best time to travel

Always remember that the seasons in Australia are the opposite of those in Germany. Also, you need to know that the weather here in the south can be very changeable. We say here that there are often "four seasons in a day". Unfortunately, this is often the case.

Summer is from December to March. Then it is extremely hot and forest fires are also an increasingly frequent reality. Autumn starts in May, and the wind is blowing from July to September/October.

From A to B - public transport

Everyone in Melbourne complains about public transport. But trams (and trains) are still the best way to get around Melbourne. If you're fit you can also take a bike, there's plenty to explore.

At the Queen Victoria Market, the street of the Vietnamese. It's quite touristy, but you can still find restaurants that are really recommendable and not that expensive. There are many other local markets where you can find food bargains.
