Mallorca in the rain: 11 tips for bad weather

The best thing to do in Mallorca when it's raining is to explore a cave. After all, there are thousands of caves on this Mediterranean island. Most of the caves are inaccessible or difficult to enter. However, five stalactite caves are easily accessible to all visitors: the Coves d'Artà, Coves de Campanet, Coves de Génova, Coves del Drach and Coves dels Hams.

Coves d'Artà

We visited all five caves and chose the top cave for a rainy day: our absolute favourite are the Coves d'Artà (Castilian: Cuevas de Artá). The caves are located on the east coast of Mallorca, more precisely in the municipality of Capdepera east of the town of Canyamel (you can find more information about the Coves d'Artà on our blog here).

The tour of the caves takes about 35 to 40 minutes. There is a guided tour every half hour. There are guided tours in Spanish, French, English and German.

We can't stop marvelling: the halls in the stalactite cave Coves d'Artà are as big as cathedrals. The rainy weather stays outside

Coves del Drach

We also like the Coves del Drach (Castilian: Cuevas del Drach), which translates as Dragon Caves. The Coves del Drach are famous for the largest underground lake in Europe, Lago Martel. The lake is 177 metres long, 40 metres wide and nine metres deep. It is also 39 metres underground. A show also takes place on this lake.

The complete cave system of the Coves del Drach is 1700 metres long. In total, there are six underground lakes in the cave. A visit to the Coves del Drach is unforgettable,

Coves de Campanet

Our third top cave tip is the Coves de Campanet, which are almost something of an insider tip. The caves are located in the north of Mallorca near the village of Campanet, close to Sa Pobla. You can visit a great cave here in a family atmosphere without too many visitors.

The cave guides are extremely keen to make your visit a great experience. There are no kitschy lighting effects in the cave, which we really like.

The Coves de Campanet are something of an insider tip on Mallorca and a great idea for an excursion when it rains.

Historical train ride with the "Red Lightning" from Palma to Sóller

The train ride with the "Red Lightning" (more information about the ride with the "Red Lightning" on our blog; from Palma to Sóller is a must on a Mallorca trip (but you can also do the ride in the other direction). Why not take the train in the rain?

You sit in the dry and the landscape passes you by. When it rains, the landscape takes on a very special atmosphere. You should allow at least half a day for the journey from Palma to Sóller and then by tram to Port de Sóller and back. If you want to spend a little more time in Sóller or Port de Sóller, you should plan a whole day.

Es Baluard

There are many great museums to explore on Mallorca. One of the most famous is Es Baluard in the island's capital Palma. The museum is located in an old fortification of the city wall. You can see modern and contemporary art in permanent and temporary exhibitions in Es Baluard (by the way, Baluard means bulwark).

Museu modernista Ca'n Prunera

We were also very impressed by the Museu modernista Ca'n Prunerain in Sóller. In the museum you get a great insight into the past. It's simply fun to stroll through the pompous rooms. There is also a lot of art to discover. Among others, works by Joan Miró, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger and Maurice Vlaminck are on display.

The Museu modernista Ca'n Prunerain in Sóller is worth a visit, whether the sun is shining or it's raining outside.

The Valldemossa Charterhouse

We really liked the Valldemossa Charterhouse. The former monastery of the Carthusian order is a very special place that is worth exploring. The history of the monastery goes back to 1399, when the King of Aragon, Martin I, had the Cartuja de Jesús Nazareno monastery built on this site. The present building, however, dates from the 18th century. In 1835, the monks living there were expelled and the monastery cells were sold to wealthy private individuals.

The most famous guests were the writer George Sand and the composer Frédéric Chopin, who lived here in the winter of 1838/39. Even today, the monastery cells are privately owned. Some of them serve as a museum. Cells 2 and 4, which were inhabited by George Sand and Frédéric Chopin, are particularly worth seeing.

The small museum in Chopin's "cell" costs extra. But if you're already there, you should treat yourself. There is also an old pharmacy with 17th and 18th century apothecary vessels and an impressive library.

Museum of Pollença

A great tip for dreary rainy days on Mallorca is the Museum of Pollença. The exhibition is great, but so is the whole setting. The museum is located in an old Dominican monastery built between 1588 and 1616. Monks lived in the house until 1836. There are many paintings to see, but also photos and archaeological pieces. Admission to the small museum is free.

But it is also worth exploring the small alleyways all around. In the Avinguda de Jaime III you will also find the famous department stores' El Corte Inglés.

What could be better than lingering in a sauna or a warm pool, or enjoying a relaxing massage while it's storming and raining outside? On Mallorca, there are a number of wellness options that are perfect to take advantage of on a rainy day. Ideally, you should stay in a hotel with a spa at http://www.hotels-of-mallorca.com/en/5-stars/. However, most hotels allow non-guests to use the spa for a fee.

Bouldering

How about hanging out on a bouldering wall when it's raining? That's exactly what you can do indoors on Mallorca.

Rocòdrom Es Cau

Rocòdrom Es Cau in Palma is the place to go bouldering all day if it's pouring outside. There are no climbing walls. However, bouldering walls are much better suited for beginners who just want to have a spontaneous try.

7. a walk on the beach

If you go on holiday to the North Sea, you always expect rain. But a walk on the stormy sea is a must at the North Sea. Why not try it on Mallorca? Feel the forces of nature on a long beach walk in the rain.

The beach of Es Trenc (Google Maps) - the longest unspoilt beach in Mallorca - is particularly suitable for a long beach walk. The beautiful sandy beach with turquoise water is about six kilometres long and completely unspoilt - here you have a real North Sea feeling when it rains. A rain jacket and rain trousers or a sturdy umbrella are, of course, a must.

The natural beach of Es Trenc invites you to take long walks on the beach - even in the rain. 8. café hopping

If it's pouring outside, you should explore the many beautiful cafés on the island. Of course, café-hopping is especially nice in Palma, the island's capital.

There are numerous cafés here that invite you to linger. An incredibly great ambience awaits you in the bar of the luxurious 5-star Hotel Mamá (Plaça de Cort, 07001 Palma). The Hotel Mamá* is an absolute top tip if you are looking for a luxurious place to stay in a top location in Palma.

Bar im Hotel Mamá

The bar at the Hotel Mamá is absolutely exceptional. 9. diving

Why not go diving when it rains? There are many good diving schools on Mallorca and plenty of great underwater landscapes to discover off the island. If you've never been diving, it's time! Why not book an introductory diving course? We're sure you'll never want to do anything else.

Diving in Mallorca is not the same as diving in the Maldives, but it's still beautiful. The best visibility underwater is usually from April to June, but the water is still very cold. In summer, the water is much warmer, but the visibility is poorer and there are more jellyfish.

Taucher im Wasser

Well, you won't see fish like in the Maldives on Mallorca. Nevertheless, it will be an unforgettable adventure. 10. read a book

Turn off your smartphone and read a good book again. This tip sounds banal. But when was the last time you banned all digital media (keyword digital detox), snuggled up in bed and read a good book? A rainy day on Mallorca offers you exactly this opportunity.
