The Island That Doesn't Exist (But Does) Suspended Over the Waters of Lake Iseo
A handful of houses overlooking the water, little boats gliding slowly, and streets where you walk - or ride - just for the pleasure of it. This gem of Lake Iseo is a must-visit.
Just a few kilometers from Brescia, in the heart of Lake Iseo, there is an island that seems unreal. Monte Isola is a car-free village, with no noise, and no rush.
Between June and September, Monte Isola becomes a small paradise for outdoor living: perfect for those seeking silence, light, and spots that look made for Instagram, yet are real.
Harbors, Views, and Slow Rituals
The main villages are Peschiera Maraglio and Carzano. The former is a picturesque lakeside gem: pastel-colored houses, cafes with tables on the pier, and fishing nets drying in the sun. Here you can taste the air-dried lake sardines, an ancient flavor telling the story of those who live by the water.
In Carzano, every five years, the famous Feast of Santa Croce takes place, a centuries-old tradition where the entire village is decorated with thousands of handmade paper flowers. A collective artistic installation that transforms the village into a live set.
And if you want to take in the view from above, climb up to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Ceriola. The view from there rewards you for every step: a panorama of the lake, mountains, silence, and sky all in one glance.
Who Should Go? (Maybe You)
Monte Isola is the right place if:
- you're looking for a relaxing and unique outing
- you want to photograph something real and beautiful
- you love cycling without traffic, on roads that line the lake
- you dream of a break filled with scenic views, fresh fish, and clean air
It's perfect for a romantic getaway, a slow weekend, or even just a day to yourself, disconnecting from the world.
How to Get There, When to Visit
To reach it, just take a ferry from Sulzano or Sale Marasino. In five minutes you'll already be on the island, with the outside world left behind.
The best months are May, June, and September: bright days, few crowds, and nature at its best. But even in the full summer - or off-season - Monte Isola always has something to share.
