Santa Giustina Lake, Non Valley: Visits, Beach, and Trails
Santa Giustina Lake is one of the largest artificial lakes in Trentino, located in the heart of the Non Valley. It is fed by the waters of the Noce River and the Barnés and Pescara streams from the Rio Novello and the Rio di San Romerio. Created in the 1950s after the construction of the Santa Giustina Dam, its waters were and still are used to drive the turbines of the underground power plant in Taio. The creation of the lake led to the submersion of many hectares of land, roads, and even some bridges that resurface today when the water level drops. Among these is the Regai bridge, which, although submerged for over 50 years, remains in perfect condition, as well as the small medieval Mula Bridge, which, however, has suffered from the wear of time.
Santa Giustina Lake, Non Valley: Visits, Beach, and Trails
Although the lake was originally created as a hydroelectric reservoir, it now offers various opportunities to relax, hike, participate in sports, and admire the natural scenery the area provides. The lake stretches eight kilometers in length and one kilometer in width, penetrating the canyons to create fascinating spots for canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts. It's also possible to rent these small boats near the lake and explore hidden coves and beautiful scenery. The shores are very steep, so access to the bank is only possible at certain points. A easily accessible spot is the Plaze area. You can reach it by following the road to Coredo, near Dermulo. Following the signs, you arrive at a large green area with parking for campers where there is a wide equipped area to stop and enjoy the lake's view and have a picnic. In this area is the only kiosk bar, "Panoramic Sunset Le Plaze," where you can refresh yourself with cold dishes and sandwiches.
Beach of Santa Giustina Lake
In the same area, a fine sandy beach with a lido equipped with deck chairs and umbrellas has also been created for those who want to quietly enjoy a day of sun and relaxation. In the summer, the area becomes a venue for events with music and performances in the evening.
What to See at Santa Giustina Lake
On the lake, it is also possible to follow the Santa Giustina Canyon loop trail. The trekking path begins at the Tassullo station. After walking a first easy section of country roads, the path becomes steeper but well protected by a handrail. You arrive at the foot of the canyon and cross the Noce River on a wooden bridge leading to the other side of the canyon, where the remains of the ancient hermitage of Santa Giustina can be found.
- Tessullo
Of what was the hermitage, little remains, just a few ruins set into the rock, but from its strategic position, you can admire a spectacular view of the valley. Upon reaching the hermitage, there's still an ascent protected by a railing leading to fields near Tessullo. Tessullo, a small village in the Non Valley, is part of the municipality of Ville d'Anaunia and houses one of the most beautiful castles in the area, still privately owned but open to the public: Castel Valer. It is worth visiting even just for its beautiful gardens, frescoes, and paintings from various eras, as well as the evocative chapel of San Valerio with frescoes by Giovanni and Battista Baschenis.
- Castell Cles
A must-see is the Castell Cles, nestled on a hill that reflects in the lake and surrounded by extraordinary apple orchards of which the Non Valley boasts several exquisite varieties. Its origins date back to the 12th century. Destroyed during peasant uprisings, restored and expanded, only part of it remains today but it is well preserved. The interiors are also open for visits and contain rooms decorated with 16th-century frescoes by the artist Marcello Fogolino.
