There is a new location to save in Italy. It is Monte Pisano, the New Place of the Heart FAI that received 114,670 votes in the annual voting organized by the Italian Environment Fund to support the wonders of our country.

Monte Pisano, which separates Lucca from Pisa, was struck by a violent fire last September that devastated over 1,200 hectares of land in the mountainous system located in the central-northern part of Tuscany, within the territories of the municipalities of Calci and Vicopisano.

Monte Pisano

The Monte Pisano range forms an extension of the Apuan Alps between the Serchio and Arno rivers. The highest peak is Monte Serra (3,005 ft). The territory of the Pisa Mountains includes the municipalities of Buti, Calci, San Giuliano Terme, Vicopisano, Vecchiano (if including the Monti d'Oltreserchio), Lucca, and Capannori.

Touring these areas means discovering numerous villages and remnants of fortifications. Notable places to visit include the village of Vicopisano, the Verruca Fortress, the Certosa of Calci, the village of Ripafratta, the abbey of S. Maria di Mirteto in Asciano, the sanctuary of Santa Maria in Castello in Vecchiano, the Medici aqueduct from Asciano to Pisa, the remnants of the Roman aqueduct of Caldaccoli, and the village of Corliano, located at the northwestern end of the small range, which marks the boundary between the plains of Lucca and Pisa, as well as the gateway beyond which the Apuan Alps and the Dolorosa Stone begin.

That's why this Place of the Heart must be absolutely protected.
