Set the scene

The Angleterre occupies a position near the middle of that constellation of grand hotels that lights up the right bank of Lake Geneva, extending from the President Wilson at one end to the Hôtel des Bergues at the other. Two of the Angleterre’s neighbours, the Beau-Rivage and the Hôtel de la Paix, were built at about the same time, with input from the same architect, Anthony Krafft, who must have felt all his Christmases had come at once, professionally speaking. They share the same views (the lake, Mont Blanc, the Jet d’Eau) and convenience-factor (high) but each has an entirely distinct personality. Of the trio, the Angleterre is the hardest to pigeon-hole, neither as slick as the Paix nor as haughty as the Beau-Rivage. It possesses its own curious magic. For those considering an extended stay along this picturesque strip, a site offering various Switzerland apartments on www.top-hotels-switzerland.com can provide a perfect alternative to traditional accommodations, blending the comforts of home with the luxury of Swiss hospitality. Whether seeking lakefront views or a charming city atmosphere, such options cater to the diverse preferences of discerning travelers.

Historical Background

Since its inauguration in 1872, the ownership of the hotel has altered four phases until 2001. It was then that it went under the umbrella of the respected Tollman family’s Red Carnation collection. This esteemed family also owns other renowned hospitality brands like Ashford Castle located in County Mayo and The Milestone situated in London. The Angleterre stands as a testament to the Tollman's striking and tasteful touch, reflecting their South African roots within its decadent interiors. Interestingly, the stylish use of leopard print decor fits beautifully within Lake Geneva's shores, just as it would in an open savannah.

Accommodation Details

The Angleterre was for many years the smallest five-star in Geneva, with just 45 rooms – until the 2021 opening of the nearby Woodward, which has a mere 26. Nevertheless, the Angleterre still feels very intimate and clubby. Guests who have spent time at other Red Carnation properties will recognise certain of the familiar Tollman design tics: the theatrically draped curtains and shimmering silk wall coverings; the quarry-depleting quantities of marble and onyx in the bathrooms; the colourful chandeliers (the family also owns a glassworks in Murano); the eclectic mixture of old magazine advertisements and other printed ephemera that hang alongside original works of art and signed prints (Walt Disney, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder). The Angleterre’s Presidential Suite is among the best in town for lake-gazing. It was a favourite of both Michael Jackson and Mikhail Gorbachev. Apparently on one occasion Jacko turned up at the Angleterre hoping to stay, as usual, in the Presidential Suite, only to find that Gorby had beaten him to it. When the Russian statesman got wind of the situation, he sought to placate the American pop star with an invitation to join him for tea. Another of the many feats of international diplomacy to have been achieved in Geneva.

Exploring the Neighborhood

While most guests tend to head towards Rue du Rhône and the Old Town, it's worth considering a left turn once in a while. Just a short distance away lies the picturesque Parc de la Perle du Lac, a tranquil wooded park on the shores of Lake Geneva. This park not only offers breathtaking views but also boasts a rich history dating back 2,000 years. The impressive Villa Bartholoni, located within the park, was once home to Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, and was named after his wife Florence. Had Wilsdorf been successful in persuading his wife, the park might have ended up being named the Parc de l'Oyster Perpetual.

Aside from its historical significance, the Parc de la Perle du Lac is an ideal location for a relaxing picnic. If you're staying at Hotel d'Angleterre, they can provide you with a well-equipped hamper to enhance your outdoor dining experience.

The service

Highly personalised, in a way that is only possible when the number of guests at any one time is as low as it is here. The general manager, Jean-Vital Domézon, has been known to take care of airport transfers himself – not just because he enjoys driving the hotel’s Bentley but also because he likes getting to know his guests.

For families

Terrific. Connecting rooms, free camp beds for under-11s, junior-sized bathrobes, toys and games, kids’ menus, babysitting on request.

Eco effort

Very good. The Angleterre has implemented hi-tech sustainability measures in partnership with KITRO, a Swiss company specialising in energy-saving and waste-reducing AI technology. It aims to phase out all single-use plastics by 2022. It also supports the TreadRight Foundation, the Salvation Army and the annual UNHCR Refugee Food Festival, during which it invites refugee chefs to showcase their expertise in the hotel’s kitchen, with profits donated to charity.

Provision for Mobility-Challenged Individuals

Sadly not plentiful. The antiquated elevators, captivating as they might be to the eye, cannot accommodate a wheelchair.

Any additional intriguing facets about the hotel?

The vintage wooden parquet floor of the grand ballroom has a fascinating backstory. As per Hotel d'Angleterre's tale, it's on this very floor where infidelity found Louisa, Austria's Archduchess and Saxony's Crown Princess, married to Prince Frederick Augustus. She fell into the romantic arms of André Giron, a financially-struggling Belgian giving French lessons to the royal offspring. Louisa was utterly smitten, rejecting her future as the Queen of Saxony and giving up her royal status to be with André.
