The perfect destinations for vacation and weekend getaways in October
Where to go for a vacation in October in Italy? It's the best time to plan short getaways and weekend escapes.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy organizing an active vacation marked by a hiking trail or a cycling itinerary.
Depending on the chosen locations, October can also be the perfect month for a final beach vacation. Here's a list of places to visit in Italy.
Val d'Orcia
The Val D'Orcia and the province of Siena are very warm in summer. What makes them perfect in fall are the numerous thermal springs in the area that are especially pleasant during this time of year.
Among these, we highlight the San Filippo thermal baths where you can relax in the thermal water and those at Bagno Vignoni which has the only Italian square fully occupied by a thermal pool. It's great for photos, but not for bathing.
Palermo
Palermo is a city rich in history and culture. Visiting it in October is ideal because you can pleasantly delight in Palermo's street food while walking the streets and take a stroll to Mondello for a day at the beach.
Among the short trips not to forget Monreale and its splendid cathedral, which is easily reachable by bus. Here you can find all the information about Palermo street food.
Cagliari
Visiting Cagliari is a delight in all seasons of the year. In October, with a bit of luck, there is still time for one last swim at the beautiful urban beach of Poetto or one of the most beautiful beaches in Cagliari.
From Cagliari, there are also two walking routes that are part of the Santiago trails of Sardinia.
One of them heads towards Sulcis and the islands of San Pietro and Sant'Antioco. Here you can find all the information about the Santo Jacu trail and here 6 beautiful trails to walk in Sardinia.

Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast in summer is off-limits. The beaches are very small, as are the wonderful little towns that color it, making it easily crowded.
In fall, we are in the low season, perhaps the best time to visit the towns of the Amalfi Coast calmly, but without having to forgo a few hours of sun at the beach.
Monferrato
September and October are the best months to visit Monferrato and the Langhe in Piedmont.
The autumn colors are most suited to the landscape where hills and vineyards peek through the mist, colored by the red hue of the leaves.
October is also the perfect month to taste the best of the local wines, paired with cheese and typical dishes. Here you can find all the info to travel along the romantic road of Langhe and the Roero.
Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre are 5 wonderful seaside villages within a beautiful National Park that is the smallest in Italy: the Cinque Terre National Park.
October is the perfect time to discover them on foot and to continue exploring the surrounding areas.
From Camogli, you can reach the abbey of San Fruttuoso with a beautiful scenic hike that leads to the seaside Abbey of San Fruttuoso. Crowded in summer, it's a true paradise in October.
Tuscia Viterbese
Not overly touristy in all seasons of the year, Tuscia is also an ideal spot in October. Here we have selected the towns of Tuscia that you simply cannot miss.
The thermal water rises to the surface rather warm, and in October, its temperature is perfect, both day and night.
Alongside relaxing at the free thermal baths, usually managed by associations that require a very low fee for membership, hiking trails and walks can be combined with visits to Etruscan necropolises. Here you can find all the info on what to see in Viterbo and surroundings.

Lampedusa
Beach lovers must absolutely take advantage of one last swim on the island of Lampedusa.
Not only because there's an ideal climate that might be favorable for beach days throughout October, but also because there are some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean here.
Rabbit Beach, with its azure waters and white sand, is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Autumn Trails
In Italy, there are numerous trails perfect for traveling on foot and at a leisurely pace. A trail is a long marked itinerary where you sleep each night in a different place.
In October, we recommend the Oropa Trail, in Piedmont, perfect for those looking to train, the Via Francigena, whether the entire route or just a part, and the Santa Barbara Mining Trail in Sardinia.
Most Beautiful Cycling Paths
October is a perfect month for cycling. It's not too hot and you just need to bring a raincoat to protect yourself from possible rain.
In Italy, there are many short or long routes to take by bicycle. October is the perfect month to dedicate yourself to the Silent Way, exploring the Cilento from the sea to the mountains and from the mountains to the sea.
