Craft Breweries in Rome

Strictly craft beer on tap: Rome is the city that is most riding the wave of this new trend in Italy, perfectly paired with gourmet culinary offerings and street food. It's no coincidence that the city also hosts the International Craft Beer Fair.

From breweries now rightfully included in the international rankings of Ratebeer to exciting new openings, we have tried to map out the spots in the city that are worth a visit.

Two premises: the list is continually updated, so if we've forgotten anyone, please be patient! The selection was made based on places where you can drink craft beer on tap, perhaps paired with good food, and does not include beer shops.

MA CHE SIETE VENUTI A FA' - Defined the sacred temple for those who love craft beer in Rome, Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa' by Emanuele Colonna and associates, is the best place to drink craft beer according to Ratebeer's global ranking. Regulars know it as Macche, located in the heart of Trastevere, it offers the widest selection of craft beers on tap and in bottles, to drink at the counter (or standing).

FASS & CASK - On Via Fanfulla da Lodi, in Pigneto, there is a brewery whose name recalls the ancient German and English traditions where beer is served exclusively from a pump (English handpumps) or gravity-fed (barrel taps): at Fass & Cask, there is no use of carbon dioxide.

The establishment has a large outdoor space, decorated in warm wood and without pretension. The menu primarily features grilled meats. Try the fried pork nuggets and the homemade sauces based on whiskey and beer.

OPEN BALADIN - A stone's throw from Campo de' Fiori, Open Baladin is one of the most well-known and stocked breweries in Rome. It opened its doors in 2009, taking the concept from another Open Baladin, the one in Cinzano near Turin. You can find over 100 bottled beers and 40 Italian beers on tap, along with a wide selection of international beers. The excellent cuisine is also worth trying, from chips to chicken strips to gourmet burgers made with Bonci's bread. The venue regularly hosts tastings and live events.

BIR&FUD - M'illuppolo d'immenso. This is the first thing (or almost) you'll notice on the staff's t-shirts as soon as you enter Bir&Fud. Right across from Macche, Bir&Fud is another concept by Manuele Colonna and associates that rises from the ashes of an old trattoria on Via Benedetta. It offers a selection of 36 taps alongside a menu of gourmet dishes and pizzas made with sourdough.

STAVIO - House-made beer and gourmet food at Stavio in Porto Fluviale. In addition to craft beers, you can choose from a variety of natural wines, some spirits, fruit juices, smoothies, coffee, a counter of cured meats and cheeses, seasonal cuisine, music, and books.

PORK'N'ROLL - Farm food, Craft Beer, Rock Music is the slogan of Pork'n'Roll, just a short walk from the Tiburtina station.

The formula is simple yet effective, with self-produced craft beers and cured meats from the family business. The venue offers a selection of 7 draft beers and 2 pumps that pair well with meat platters from home and sandwiches. The atmosphere is undoubtedly rock-inspired.

BARLEY WINE - Where can you drink good beer in Quadraro? At Barley Wine, which offers 9 draft beers and two pumps: all strictly craft. Here you can also find a good selection of natural wines from Les Vignerons.

BRASSERIE 4.20 - Here, beer is eaten (besides being drunk, of course). Yes, because at 4.20 on Via Portuense, beer is the special ingredient in bread, sauces, and Hop Burgers (which are actually prepared with fresh hops). The very nice roof garden on the upper floor is worth a visit.

TREES FOLK'S - The venue specializes in Real Ale and is the perfect place for those who love English beer. Upon entering, the impression is of being in an Anglo-Saxon pub with walls covered in memorabilia. 13 varieties of beer are available.

MAD FOR BEER - A small British-style venue whose motto is "Let's get fucking drunk." Here, in the Monteverde neighborhood, Mad for Beer offers 8 taps and a decent selection of craft beers in bottles, both Italian and foreign. The kitchen and sandwiches are also good. Don't leave without trying a sausage and mascarpone bruschetta.

MOZZICO - In San Lorenzo, in the spaces of the former Brasserie Porquoi, Mozzico has an excellent selection of craft beers and natural wines. There are also whiskies, rums, mixed drinks, and a varied gastronomic offering that divides between "svojature" (snacks and appetizers) and "mozzichi" (savory bombes filled with ingredients).

There are also more elaborate dishes.

HOPSIDE - A delightful place offering a good selection of craft beers from Italy and beyond. A spot worth visiting for the cuisine as well. Hopside is a Burger Bar, and here you can choose the ingredients of your burger, in addition to trying some good street food.

LUPPOLO 12 - The best place to drink beer in San Lorenzo. Great for an aperitif with chips, platters, and focaccia along with a selection of 12 taps (two of which are pumps) and bottled beers.

BIRRA + - A landmark for beer lovers in Pigneto. A beer shop that is also a pub offering about a hundred labels, 6 taps, and one pump.

SO GOOD - Gourmet sandwiches, platters, salads, and cheeses that pair well with a selection of 6 craft beers on tap, both Italian and otherwise (the menu also offers bottles). So Bad So Good provides a menu focused on quality, selecting products directly from small regional producers.

KOMBEER - A small but very welcoming space, thanks to its 70s decor. Kombeer, located between Piazza Fiume and Porta Pia and dedicated to craft beer, offers 8 taps and a selection of natural wines.

BUSKERS - The name itself hints at its itinerant vocation. Buskers doesn't have a fixed production setup but periodically sells great beers at other breweries. In the locale, just steps from the University of Rome Three, you can choose from twelve beers on tap and a large selection of bottles from the best Italian breweries. In addition to beer, you'll find Gabriele Bonci's excellent sandwiches here.

IL SERPENTE - The venue known to (almost) all San Lorenzo regulars offers rotational taps of exclusively craft beer.

BON BOCK CAFE' - A historic whisky bar and brewery in the heart of Monteverde.

Open since 1992, it still serves excellent beers and fine whisky. You can also snack on something here.
