We can certainly say that in Lisbon you can find some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. In the surroundings of the city, you can discover the most beautiful beaches in the region easily accessible by train or bus, small oases of peace perfect for a day trip departing from Lisbon.

Along the coastline to the north and south of Lisbon, there are sandy shores, large beaches shaped by water and wind, perfect for surfing, and small sheltered coves.

  • Carcavelos Beach

Carcavelos Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Lisbon. It is a vast expanse of sand dominated by the São Julião da Barra Fort. Due to its proximity to the city, it is one of the most frequented beaches by locals and tourists wanting to go to the sea from Lisbon. The beach is located on the Lisbon-Cascais line. It can be reached by train (in 20 minutes) from the Cais do Sodré station in Lisbon, getting off at Carcavelos. On the same line, you will also find Parede Beach and Cascais Beach.

  • Estoril Beach

Just before arriving in Cascais, you will encounter Estoril Beach: a small stretch of sand near the town. It may not be one of the most beautiful beaches on the Portuguese coast, but it is certainly easy to access, as it can be reached in 10 minutes from Cais do Sodré (Blue Metro stop).

  • Praia Grande

Praia Grande is a famous surf beach located at the western edge of the Serra de Sintra National Park. The beach faces the fury of the Atlantic Ocean and offers massive, powerful waves perfect for surfing. As the name suggests, this is the biggest beach on the Cascais-Sintra coast. It can be reached by train (on the Lisbon - Sintra line departing from Rossio, right in the city center) in about half an hour.

A valid alternative to Praia Grande is Praia de Magoito, with its steep cliffs and Cabo da Roca, which can be seen in the distance.

  • Orsa Beach

On the southern coast of Sintra, Orsa Beach is reached by crossing a steep path descending from Cabo da Roca. It is an isolated and protected beach, perfect for those who enjoy the sea in blissful solitude. Nearby is Praia da Adraga, one of the most beautiful beaches in Sintra, surrounded by cliffs with numerous caves. Praia Pequena is one of the best for swimming and is located next to Praia Grande.

  • Guincho Beach

Praia do Guincho, in Cascais, is a sandy paradise shaped by waves and sea, protected by spectacular dunes. The beautiful beach is nestled between cliffs and can be reached by walking a beautiful path through the rocks.

  • Troia Beach

It is a 15 km stretch of sand just a quarter of an hour from Lisbon. It is easily reachable by bus from the city. The bus to get to Costa da Caparica beach departs from Praça de Espanha.

  • Creiro Beach

Further south of Lisbon, you can reach Troia Beach: a long and narrow peninsula characterized by very white sand. Troia is ideal for those looking to take a break from the relentless force of the ocean wind in Portugal. On certain days, the shallow waters and clear water may make it feel more like a beach in the Aegean than the Atlantic.

  • Galapinhos Beach

Creiro Beach, in Setúbal, is a natural paradise characterized by white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. It is located within the Arrábida National Park.

Surrounded by steep wooded hillsides that descend to the white beach. Along the bay, you can find the small village of Portinho da Arrábida. The inviting waters of the sea are calm and tranquil.

It can be reached by car by traveling the less than 50 km that separate it from Lisbon. Alternatively, you have to take a bus to Vila F. Azeitão and a taxi to the beach.

In the Arrábida Natural Park, you will also find Sesimbra, a charming fishing village on the ocean. It is worth visiting its beautiful beach.

In the Arrábida Natural Park, near Setúbal, the idyllic Praia de Galapinhos is one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. The crescent of white sand, surrounded by the densely wooded hills of the Serra da Arrábida, is lapped by crystal-clear blue waters. The beach is accessed via a steep walking path.

Lagoa beach is perfect for windsurfing. Along the shore, you will find a small saltwater lagoon. The beach is located along a stretch of coast that is still little known and not served by public transport. You can only reach it by car.
