Beaches Near Florence

Right now, there are two types of people in the world: those who close their eyes and dream of a sunny vacation at the beach, in complete relaxation, and those who are lying.

The beautiful season is making us suffer, and the high temperatures seem reluctant to actually arrive. In this unusual spring, from every perspective, the weather is as changeable as our moods: there are days when one can stroll in a t-shirt and shorts and rainy days to be spent with the heaters still on.

The desire to dive into crystal-clear waters, sip cocktails under the umbrella, and sunbathe on the shore becomes increasingly intense.

This is why, as soon as possible, one must plan a few days at the beach. While waiting for the real vacation, one can also think about a short and easy weekend getaway, escaping the routine and the frantic normality of the cities. What are the most beautiful beaches to reach starting from Florence? Here are 4 perfect destinations (+ 1) to go to the beach not too far from Florence.

Where to Go to the Beach Departing from Florence

  • Forte dei Marmi

It doesn't even need an introduction: Forte dei Marmi is the most famous Tuscan location when it comes to beach vacations. Its Capannina has made at least 3 generations of romantics dream thanks to the direction of Carlo Vanzina and the stars of Sapore di Mare 1 and 2 (and recently also thanks to the reboot Sapore di te). The Forte, with its always cutting-edge beach clubs, well-equipped hotels, high-fashion boutiques, and renowned restaurants where fresh seafood can be enjoyed, remains one of the most sought-after tourist destinations today.

About an hour and thirty minutes drive from Florence - ideal if you have the whole weekend available.

  • Vada

With about the same travel time, you can also reach Vada in the province of Livorno. The seaside resort is a frazione of the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo and is famous for its white beaches. This particular coloration of the sand is due to limestone and calcium carbonate discharges from a plant located about 1 km from the beach. Today, the industry has been converted, and the White Beaches have frequently received recognition for the Blue Flag. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tuscany, and until 2004, this stretch of beach hosted the famous "Sangriata."

  • Torre del Lago

About an hour and twenty from Florence, easily reachable by train, is Torre del Lago, a frazione of Viareggio. It's the ideal destination for those who want to combine a (though short) beach vacation with other attractions. The uniqueness of this village is that it is divided between the lake (as its name suggests) of Massaciuccoli and the sea of Versilia. Besides the famous free beach of Lecciona, this place - in normal times, outside of health emergency restrictions - attracted many tourists especially due to its local clubs and beachside discos. Furthermore, Torre del Lago is home to ancient and important Villas. The most famous are those that belonged to the Bourbon family and the one that was owned by Giacomo Puccini, which today houses the museum dedicated to the composer and Maestro.

  • Marina di Vecchiano

Not far from Torre del Lago is Marina di Vecchiano, in the province of Pisa. Unlike the nearby village, ideal for young tourists who love fun or want to combine a cultural tour with a weekend at the beach, Marina di Vecchiano is perfect for those considering a vacation with kids. The tranquility of the place and the 3 km of sandy shoreline make this spot ideal for families. The village is also part of the territory of the Migliarino di San Rossore Park, which, with its green itineraries, is fascinating for both adults and children.

The distance to cover is greater, as is the time taken to reach the destination in question. In reality, this even extends outside the region, because we are talking about the Ligurian coast, but it is not uncommon for Florentines to reach the famous Cinque Terre on weekends. Ancient fishing villages, characterized by colorful houses perched on the sea and balconies always adorned with flowers. The typical places to eat fish and the famous Sentiero Azzurro that connects the villages and offers breathtaking views of the sea, alone justify the little more than two hours of travel it takes to get to the Cinque Terre from Florence.
